Nestled under the stewardship of Julien Richard, a dedicated third-generation winemaker and the husband of Elodie Milhade (also the proprietor of Château Tour Bayard), this estate flourishes with a commitment to sustainability. Julien oversees the entire estate with a forward-looking vision, evidenced by its prestigious HVE3 certification (High Environmental Value). A significant milestone was reached in 2020, marking the commencement of the property’s transition to Organic Agriculture under Julien’s leadership. Prior to his takeover, the estate was in the capable hands of a longstanding Bordeaux Right bank family, boasting generations of viticultural expertise.

The estate’s intriguing name, “Ormeaux,” finds its roots in the robust tree of the same name, abundant in the region, known for producing durable wood akin to oak, often utilized in crafting fine furniture that withstands the test of time. This name echoes throughout the vineyard’s locale and the surrounding paths, symbolizing not only the resilience and enduring quality of the trees but also the solid foundation and excellence embodied by the estate itself.

Vineyard

Situated on the plateau of Néac village in the esteemed Pomerol area, the Château des Ormeaux vineyard is situated in an exceptional terroir of gravel clay, primarily planted with the Merlot grape. This moderately sized vineyard covers an area of 3.6 hectares. Boasting a vineyard predominantly planted with over 80% Merlot grapes, a characteristic hallmark of the sector, Château des Ormeaux thrives on a terroir composed of exquisite clayey gravel. This unique soil composition ensures a harmonious balance of water drainage, vital for the vines’ well-being. The plots, thoughtfully grouped into blocks on a plateau, bask in a consistent and ample exposure to the sun. This distinctive terroir has earned acclaim for producing the finest Pomerol wines, including renowned names like Petrus and La Fleur Petrus, both located a mere 1 mile away. Julien Richard, guided by a steadfast commitment to sustainability, has spearheaded innovative vineyard practices since 2020. These include the production of fertilizers from natural sources such as whey and compost herbal teas, the introduction of ecograzing with sheep between December and March, and the ongoing conversion to organic viticulture, with the eagerly awaited 2023 vintage marking the estate’s inaugural foray into organic certification.

Winemaking

The wine blend comprises 82% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 7% Cabernet Franc, reflecting a deliberate composition to highlight the unique character of the terroir. Our commitment to natural methods is evident throughout the winemaking process. The manual harvest in crates ensures careful handling, preserving the fruit’s integrity and elegance. Upon arrival at the cellar, the grapes undergo pre-fermentation and cold maceration in vats to enhance the brightness and precision of the fruit aromas. Gentle extraction techniques, such as punching down and pumping over, contribute to the refinement of the tannins. Maceration at a controlled temperature adds depth, resulting in a round and velvety structure. The aging process is meticulously executed for 12 months, with 60% in barrels, 30% in concrete tanks, and 10% aged in amphorae.

Vintage

A rainy winter followed cool spring weather and inconsistent flowering, but the summer weather was dry and warm with even temperatures through harvest. A little August rain helped the vines mature and kept acidities fresh.

Tasting Note

Château Des Ormeaux unveils a distinctly Pomerolais style, characterized by a smooth rounded mid-palate and tannins that exude finesse and elegance. The wine presents itself with a deep, captivating purple hue in the glass. The nose promptly introduces aromas of violet, accompanied by subtle undertones of incense and cedar. The palate, robust and invigorating, embodies a structured yet delicate midpalate. The finish is notably long, leaving a lasting and juicy impression. With a notable aging potential of 10-30 years, Château Des Ormeaux emerges as an ideal accompaniment to dishes such as lamb, game, grilled meats, and cheeses, providing a versatile and robust culinary pairing.
